Walter Willis Eger was born in Elkhart County, Indiana, on April 2, 1940 to the late Kermit H. and Lina (Lynn) Eger.  He passed away June 23, 2024 in South Bend, Indiana.  He spent his youth on the corner of Douglas and Beech Roads in Harris Township in what the family calls “Egerville”.  Grandpa and Grandma Eger and two uncles and their families lived on the 40 acres.

In 1954 he graduated from 8th grade from Harris Township school and graduated from Washington-Clay High School in 1958.  He graduated from Valparaiso Technical Institute in 1960.

November 26, 1960 he married Karen E. Mueller at Gospel Center Church in South Bend.  She survives along with their children, Lisa (Burton) Matteson, Laura (Richard) Smith, Paul (Kris) Eger, and Bradley Eger.  The grandchildren are Sahara (Ryan) Cornett, Galen Matteson, Gareth (Stephanie) Matteson, Robin (Alfredo) Dominguez, Luke Smith, Kari (Chad) Call, Paul Eger Jr., Benjamin (Anna) Eger, Kirsten and Tyler Eger.  He was Grandpa Train to the grandchildren. Also surviving are eight great grandchildren.

December 8, 1987 he married Shirley Schlobohm.  She survives along with her children, Dan (Karen) Schlobohm and Sally (Chris) Tan, and her grandchildren Haley (Bryan) Harrell and Andrew, Katelyn and Carson Tan and three great grandchildren.

Also surviving are his sister, Thelma (Randall) Myers, and their children Michelle Paluzzi and Michael (Teri) Myers and brother Henry (Freda) Eger and their child Henry Jr.  There are many cousins and 5 great nieces and nephews.

Walt was a fixer.  He worked for Crown International, IBM, MAI, Sorbus, Data Comp. WSBT, K&S Heating and Air Conditioning, Fapco and Ace Hardware.  He was a member of a Blacksmiths Club and volunteered at World Missionary Press.

Walt loved trains and spent much time at the Hesson Steam Grounds.  He owned two 7 ½ inch gauge Engines.  He was president of the St. Joseph Valley Railroad Club (HO size trains) and a member of the Tri-State Locomotive Club.

For the past several years he attended Calvary Baptist Church (now Calvary Church) in South Bend.

Funeral Services for Walt will be held AT 12:00 PM, Saturday, June 29, 2024 at Calvary Church 3001 Cleveland Road South Bend, IN 46628.  Friends may visit with family from 10:00 am until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to World Missionary Press or Calvary Church.  Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer North Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
