SOUTH BEND - Dan Dimich, 82, of 19019 Layden Street, died on Tuesday, May 20, of natural causes. He was born September 18,1925, in Hazelcrest, Illinois, to Sophie (Petkovoich) and Nicholas Dimich and had lived in South Bend since 1960.

He married June Risher on March 21, 1948, in Terre Haute, IN. She died February 16, 2006.

Surviving are his daughter, Dianne (Roger) Benko of Elkhart; two granddaughters, Lindsay (Michael) Mintenko of Colorado Springs, CO, and Lesley (Blair) Melvin of Chicago, IL; a great-granddaughter, Madison Mintenko. He is also survived by a brother, George Dimich of South Bend. Mr. Dimich graduated from Washington High School in 1944.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in the United State Navy from 1944 to 46, on the USS Tatum. After his discharge from the service, he attended Indiana State University, graduating in 1950. He received his masters of arts of education degree from Ball State University in 1959. While at Indiana State, he received N.A.I.A. All-American honors in basketball.

Mr. Dimich retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation in 1986, after teaching for 26 years at Clay High School. He served in education for 37 years and enjoyed coaching basketball for 23 years. He was active in the Indiana State Alumni Association and the planning of his naval reunions. He was a charter member of Clay United Methodist Church and a member of the Washington High School Hall of Fame.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 24, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend, with Tom Thews of Trinity United Methodist Church, Elkhart, officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today, May 23, in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the YMCA of Michiana and the Indiana State University Foundation; or to the charity of the donor's choice.
