Dorothy Downey (Kryder) - Class Of 1941 VIEW PROFILE

DOROTHY (DOWNEY) KRYDER

Dorothy J. Kryder Nov. 7, 1922 - July 26, 2014 GRANGER - Dorothy J. Kryder, 91, passed away peacefully into the arms of her Savior on July 26, 2014. Born in Cuyahoga Falls, OH, on November 7, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Clem and Leah Downey.

She was preceded in death by all of her siblings, Hebert, John, Clem, Alma and Paul.

As a young child, the family relocated to South Bend, where she attended and graduated from St. Joseph Academy and Washington-Clay High School.

On June 27, 1942, Dorothy married the love of her life, Harold Kryder. When he developed Alzheimer's, she became a full-time caregiver for fourteen years until his death in 2012. They were married seventy years.

Left to cherish her memory are a son, Bill Kryder of Bristol, IN; and four grandchildren, Korey of Syracuse, NY, Kasey of Rochester, NY, Katie of Rochester, NY, and Jamie Kryder of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who have many fond memories of "Aunt Dorothy," not only for her famous homemade fruit pies, but the knowledge and experiences she shared over ninety-one years of life. There were also many fond memories of Dorothy and Harold having family and friends come to their cottage on Indiana Lake. She had a profound influence on everyone she came in contact with, and was very involved with the community.

When her son, Bill, started school, Dorothy began a twenty-two year career at Mossberg Printing Company in the accounting department. After retirement, she began her second career as a volunteer. She spent ten years with the American Red Cross, as an intake coordinator; and she was a founder of the North East Neighborhood Food Pantry. She was also involved with the Center for History, and the Robinson Learning Center. The most important thing in Dorothy's life, next to her family, was her faith. She was an active member of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, where she volunteered wherever she was needed. Dorothy moved to the Village of Arborwood, in Granger, where she immediately made an impact by getting involved with the social activities and gaining friendships. She leaves behind many fond memories, and gave so much of her time and energy to make it a better place for the rest of us. She will be dearly missed.

Visitation will be from 8-9 AM on Friday, August 1, at the McGann Hay, University Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated at 9:30 AM at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame. Burial will follow at Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made, in Dorothy's name, to the North East Neighborhood Food Pantry, 803 N. Notre Dame Ave., South Bend, IN 46617. To send condolences, please visit www.McGannHay.com.
