GRANGER - Richard D. Lovin, 81, passed away Thursday evening with his family with him. He was born March 17, 1928, in Fountain City, IN, to the late Fred B. and Ethel (Wilson) Lovin. He was also preceded in death by his step-parents, Lucille Lovin and David Beetley.

On April 2, 1950, in Indianapolis, IN, he married Dorothea Reagan, who survives along with his children, Jeanette Lovin Meyer (David) of Greenfield, IN, and Jeffrey D. Lovin (Diane) of Mishawaka, IN. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Christine, Amy and Eric Meyer and Dana Lovin.

Richard graduated from Richmond High School in Richmond, IN, and began his further studies at the Jordan Conservatory/Butler University and received his BA in music education in 1950. He was drafted into the United States Army and served in Korea. After his service he returned to his studies and received his master's of voice from Indiana University, Bloomington.

He was a band director at Otterbein, Rolling Prairie and Washington High Schools. He then retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation as band director at Clay High School after 20 years of teaching at Clay.

After retiring in 1985, he continued working as a piano tuner for the next 24 years. He played the trumpet for the South Bend Symphony for many years and presently with the Elkhart Symphony. He was the director and player with the Twin Cities Band for 40 years. He also directed the Jazz Assemblage and his own dance band, the Lov'n Style. For nine years he sang tenor with the Camerata Singers. He was a member of the First United Methodist choir in Mishawaka for 31 years.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, in the First United Methodist Church, 201 E. 3rd St., Mishawaka, with Rev. Larry Whitehead officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call today from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road. Memorial contributions may be made to The First United Methodist Church, Mishawaka. Due to construction on Cleveland Road, entrance may be made on Hickory Road south of Brick.
