SOUTH BEND - James B. Montague, 84, of South Bend, passed away Saturday morning in Ironwood Health and Rehab. On September 30, 1924, James was born to the late Joseph B. and Anna P. (Smith) Montague in Scott County, TN. He was also preceded by a sister, Iona Terry.

On January 17, 1948, in South Bend, he married Sylvia A. (Hock) Tompkins, who died in 1996. Surviving are a daughter, Deborah L. Sult (David C.) of South Bend; sons, James A. Montague (Barbara) of Elkhart and Thomas G. Tompkins (Sandy) of Niles; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. James retired at age 70 from Saint Mary's College as supervisor of maintenance after 10 years. Prior to that he retired from RACO in South Bend in 1985.

James graduated from The Washington Clay High School and served in the United States Army in World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 357 and the P.N.A. Club. James was an avid fisherman and loved getting the big ones.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 19th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., and burial with military honors will be conducted at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
