Herbert A. Sloan, Ph.D., 51, of Woodknoll Drive, Granger, Ind., died unexpectedly Saturday morning, Aug. 9, in Chicago, Ill.
Herb was born Sept. 8, 1951, in Bremen, Ind., to the late Paul M. and Betty June (Oler) Sloan, and had lived in the South Bend, Ind., area his entire life.
He is survived by his mother, Patricia M. Sloan of South Bend; a sister, Judith E. (Mark) Taelman of South Bend; two brothers, Steven P. (Lauren) Sloan of Katy, Texas, and David S. Sloan of Seattle, Wash.; a niece, Kaitlin Taelman; two nephews, Christopher and Michael Taelman; and by many special friends around the world.
Herb was currently employed by the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation as the principal of Mary Frank Elementary School, a position he had held since July 2000. He was a graduate of Clay High School in 1969, Ball State University in 1974 with a B.S. in education, Indiana University in 1978 with an M.S. in education, and Purdue University in 1993 with a Ph.D. in educational administration. He began his career in education at Kennedy Elementary School from 1974-1979, then to Bittersweet School from 1979 to 1982. He was appointed principal of Moran Elementary School in 1985 and held that position until moving to the newly built Meadow's Edge Elementary School in 1998, which he held until his current assignment.
He was named the "Outstanding Principal" by the Indiana State PTA in 2003. In the Penn-Harris-Madison system he was a Title I Administrator for 1998 to 2002, a member of the Leadership Team Improvement Committee since 1988, the Language Arts Committee since 1999, and served as the chairman of the Young Authors' Conference since 2001. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the St. Joseph County Youth Service Bureau from 1996 to 2001, and served as president from 1999 to 2001. He was also a member of the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and was a Notre Dame International Student host. Herb was like a family member and close friend to many international students at Notre Dame. They feel privileged to have known him and consider his loss a personal tragedy.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, with Rev. Daniel Berger of First United Methodist Church, South Bend, officiating. Cremation will take place at Michiana Crematory, with burial to follow at Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Youth Service Bureau, 222 Lincoln Way West, South Bend, IN 46628; to Mary Frank Elementary School, 13111 Adams Road, Granger, IN 46530; or to the Scholarship Foundation of St. Joseph County, 3515 N. Main St., Mishawaka, IN 46545.
