SOUTH BEND - Melvin K. Strom 83 of South Bend passed away Wednesday evening at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born October 23, 1924, in South Bend to the late Samuel and Florence (Rauschenbach) Strom. Also preceding him was a brother John Strom.

On November 24, 1951, he was united in marriage to Billie Jean Vinson at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Mishawaka. He is survived by his wife Billie, daughter Lisa J. Lichkay (Alan) of Florida, sons Stephen V. of South Bend, William A. (Carmon) of Virginia Beach, VA and Mathew A. (Tammi) of Yelm, Washington; six grandchildren Adam Lichkay, Cathy, Jessica, Michael, Staci and Stephanie Strom; and three great-grandchildren, Dillon, Tyler and Jaden.

Melvin graduated from Washington-Clay high school in 1942, and after graduation he joined the United States Navy. After his Navy service he worked for the United States Department of Agriculture and retired after 20 years service. Melvin was a loving husband and father and grandfather his memory will not be forgotten.

His wishes were to be cremated without service or visitation. The Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North assisted the family with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Paul's Episcopal Church. E-mail condolences may be made to welshfh@yahoo.com.
