Lt. Col. (Ret) John W. Vogt, Jr.

May 26, 1947 - Oct. 18, 2017

GRANGER - Lt. Col. (Ret) John W. Vogt, Jr., 70, of Granger passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Brownsville, PA on May 26, 1947 to Lt. Col. (Ret) John W. and Virginia (McLaughlin) Vogt, Sr. John has been a resident of the Michiana area since 1994 coming from Ohio.

On October 25, 1969 in Chandler, AZ he married Barbara J. Bennett who survives. John is also survived by his mother, Virginia Vogt of Upper Marlboro, MD; three daughters, Kara M. Vogt of Stevensville, MI, Krista M. (Dillon) Gonderman of Indianapolis, IN and Alexis M. Vogt of Granger; one son, John M. Vogt of South Bend; four grandchildren, Lana Vogt, Kassidy Grange, Kayden Vogt and Zachary Osborne; and three brothers, Mark Vogt and Eric Vogt both of Maryland and Danny Vogt of Alabama.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lt. Col. John W. Vogt, Sr.

John graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor Degree in Economics. He also had a Master's Degree in Management from Central Michigan University.

He retired from the South Bend Community School Corp. after 20 years of service doing what he loved, working with the students in the Junior ROTC Program at Clay High School. He also retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel after 24 years of active duty, serving during Desert Storm and Desert Shield and he served two tours during Vietnam as a B-52 pilot.

John loved photography, watching Notre Dame football, and military aircrafts, especially B52's which is what he flew during his service in the U.S. Air Force. He also was a history buff and loved watching the History Channel and older war movies.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 24th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Hanley and Sons Funeral Home “Southwest Chapel” located at State Road 23/W. Ireland Road, South Bend. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, October 25th at 11:00 AM in the funeral home with Pastor Mike Smith officiating. Burial with Military Honors will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions be made to American Diabetes Association, 115 North Lafayette Blvd., South Bend, IN 46601.

The HANLEY and Sons Funeral Home handled arrangements and services, and extends its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Vogt family.
