Kenneth R. Olin

Kenneth Reed Olin, 88, passed away peacefully in his home with his loving wife and family present. Ken was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, a lifetime educator and a great debater of grand ideas. When asked how he wanted to be remembered, he responded, "I loved kids."
He was married at the Congregational Christian Church in South Bend to Mary H. Hoel on Dec. 21, 1940. She survives. His place of residence was 1 1 982 State Road 10, Argos, Indiana. Also surviving are one daughter, Marjorie Ann Olin (Dan) Snider; one son, Kenneth Lee (Barbara) Olin; two grandchildren, Russell Eric Olin Snider and Amy Marie Olin; and three great-grandchildren, R.J., Caleb and Johanna-Christine Snider.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Brian Daniel Snider.
Ken was the only child born to Leverett and Mary (Crowder) Olin on January 23, 1917, in New Richmond, Indiana. He was raised in Fulton County and South Bend where he graduated from Washington Clay High School in 1934. He worked a short time and then attended Manchester College. After two years at Manchester, he taught at Green Township for four years and Washington Clay for six years. He completed his master's degree, principals and superintendents licenses at I.U. in 1 951 . That same year he moved with his family to Leiters Ford, Indiana, where he was the principal of the Aubbeenaubbee Twp. School for 20 years. In 1965 he missed the classroom and returned to elementary teaching. He completed his tenure in the Plymouth School Corporation as a principal of Washington Elementary School. In all, he spent 42 years as an educator and retired in 1980.
Ken served proudly in the United States Army from 1945 to 1946 in active duty during World War II, and served in the Army Reserve from 1950 to 1953.
Each summer he spent time working around Lake Maxinkukee or Culver as a painter and wall paper hanger to supplement his teaching income. Ken and Mary also took a camping trip with their children every summer. After retiring, Ken and Mary enjoyed traveling in their truck and Jayco camper all over North America. They were often joined by family or friends and spent many winters traveling around the South and West. Ken was always very active in the community in which he lived and served as the chairman of several organizations including the church board and Lions.
He was a member of the Argos United Methodist Church, Argos Lions Club, F.&A.M. Plymouth-Kilwinning Lodge 149 where he completed the 32nd Degree, and Marshall County Retired Teachers Association. Visitation and memories may be shared at the Grossman Funeral Home in Argos from 2 to 4:00 p.m. and from 6 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 28, 2005.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2005, at the Argos United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Robert Vale and Rev. David Kerkove officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m. prior to the service.
Burial will be at the New Oakhill Cemetery in Plymouth, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Argos United Methodist Church (building fund), Salvation Army, or to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home for any of these donations
