Nancy Jean Winland, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2024, at the age of 86, surrounded by her family. Born on January 30, 1938, in South Bend to the late Charles and Charlotte (Ernsperger) Roher. Nancy lived a life marked by love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to her family and friends. 


Nancy's journey through life was one of companionship and devotion. She married the love of her life, William "Bill" Winland, on July 27, 1985, in their shared hometown of South Bend. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Sadly, Nancy was preceded in death by her mother Charlotte Roher, her father Charles Roher, her brothers Larry Roher and Ronald Roher and her daughters, Christy Dozier and Cheryl Norris. She is survived by her husband William “Bill” Winland and stepchildren, Bill (Tina) Winland, Tim (Natalie) Winland, Kathy (Jim) Clark, Robert (Darla) Winland, and Jim (Jessika) Winland, as well as her son-in-law, Pernell Dozier.


Nancy was a proud grandmother of 17 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. The sparkle in her eyes shone even brighter with the arrival of each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.


A graduate of Washington/Clay High School, Nancy's professional life was marked by her role as a dedicated secretary until her retirement in 1981. Her work ethic and professionalism were admired by all who knew her. Beyond her career, Nancy was an active participant in various associations. A proud member of the American Business Women Association and The Circle of Friends. Her commitment to service was further exemplified by her long-standing involvement with the Eastern Star, where she was recently received with her 50-year pin.


Nancy's interests and activities reflected her vibrant personality and caring nature. She was an active member of the Forestbrook Missionary Church of South Bend, where her faith and fellowship were cornerstones of her life. Nancy's essence was one of warmth and openness; she was a friend to all and never met a stranger. Her role as a mother extended beyond her own family, touching the lives of many who came to know her as a maternal figure.


Those who knew Nancy will fondly remember her for her contagious laughter and sassy personality. She had a unique ability to light up a room and bring joy to any conversation. Nancy was also known for her love of being on the phone, always staying connected with her extensive circle of friends and family.


Nancy's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved her, but her spirit remains a guiding light. Her life was a beautiful tapestry of relationships, service, and joy that will continue to inspire and comfort those she leaves behind.


Funeral services for Nancy will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2024 at Palmer Funeral Home – Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Rd. South Bend. Graveside services and burial will follow at Galien Township Cemetery in Galien, MI. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.
