SOUTH BEND -  Dr. Lawrence T. Eby, 84, of Arlington Heights, Ill., died on Sunday, Sept. 3, in the Church Creek Healthcare Center, Arlington Heights. He was born on May 3, 1916, in South Bend, Ind., and was of Arlington Heights for over 33 years. Lawrence graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1938 with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. In 1939 he received his master's in organic chemistry from Notre Dame, graduating magna cum laude.

In 1941 he graduated magna cum laude from Notre Dame with a doctorate in organic chemistry. In 1988 he received the "Award of Honor" (celebrating the Centennial of Science 1865-1965) from the University of Notre Dame as one of the 50 living distinguished Notre Dame scientists. His professional career began with Standard Oil of New Jersey (which became the Esso Research and Engineering Company, and is now ExxonMobil) as a research chemist where he developed and was responsible for 33 U.S. patents and had many papers published. He later was assistant manager, market development, for Enjay Chemical Company, president of Protective Treatments, Inc., Areoplast Corporation and Dellrose Industries in Dayton, Ohio, and was also director of development, chemical division, for the Chrysler Corporation. He completed his career with U.S. Gypsum Corporation in Libertyville where he began in 1967 as manager and later associate director of research. In 1986 he retired from U.S. Gypsum as the director of research.

Dr. Eby's professional memberships include the American Chemical Society where he served as director, councilor, chairman of the North Jersey Section and chairman, Division of Chemical Marketing and Economics. He served as chairman of the committee that designed the Chemical Society exhibit "Chemical Frontiers of the Sea" in the Hall of Science at the New York World's Fair in 1964- 1965; the American Institute Chemists where he was councilor and chairman of the New Jersey chapter; received the Honor Scroll Award from the American Institute of Chemists; was a life member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; chairman of the Chicago Chapter of the Commercial Development Association; a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association; Society of Plastic Engineers; Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry; American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists; Association of Iron and Steel Engineers; Society of Automotive Engineering; Society of Research Administrators; International Union of Testing and Research Laboratories for Material & Structure; Research Directors' Association of Chicago, where he served as president; the Midwest Chemical Marketing Association; and the Akron Rubber Group. Dr. Eby was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights where he also served on the board of trustees, and was an ordained member of the board of elders.

He was an Eagle Scout and served as a scoutmaster, and enjoyed golf and fishing.

He was a devoted husband of Claudine I. (Hart), to whom he was married on June 8, 1941; loving father of Jane (John) David of Arlington Heights and Claudia Ann Eby of Pasadena, Calif.; dear grandfather of William C. (Heidi) Korner Jr. and Jennifer S. Fisher; sister, Virginia Harter; brother, Douglas (Dorothy) Eby; and his niece, Nancy Harter.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, in the Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road (four blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights. Services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8, in the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights, 302 N. Dunton Avenue. Committal service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 11, in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, 375 W. Cleveland Road, Granger, Ind. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights, 302 N. Dunton Avenue, Arlington Heights, IL 60004.
