Ernest E. Freund

Ernest E. Freund, 90, of South Bend, passed away Friday evening, March 4, in Regency Place of South Bend. Ernest was born on Dec. 21 , 1913, in Indianapolis, Ind. Preceding Ernest in death were his parents; and a son, Ernest E. "Woody" Freund; and three brothers, Robert, George and Joseph.
On April 4, 1941, in South Bend, he married the former Margaret Ginther, who survives along with a daughter, Cynthia J. Snyder and husband, Douglas of South Bend. Three grandchildren, Shannon Snyder of South Bend, Capt. Scott (Paige) Snyder, U.S. Army Fort Benning, Ga., and Ryan Snyder of South Bend; and several very special nieces and nephews.
Mr. Freund was an aeronautical engineer and worked in the System research laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base working on the tires and brakes for the space shuttle. Mr. Freund served in the U.S. Army-Air Corp during World War II and belonged to the American Legion Post 50 in South Bend. For over 50 years he was a Sunday school teacher at the Albright United Methodist Church (Keystone class) and was very active in all aspects of the church. He loved to fly and he soloed at the age of 1 6, and never lost the love of flying. He was active in the Gideon Bible society. He will be missed and remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and good friend.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9, in the Albright United Methodist Church, 504 W. Mishawaka Ave., and burial will follow at Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Friends will be received in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 17033 Cleveland Road, Tuesday, March 8, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to services in the church.
