Robert Owen Kuehl

Robert Owen Kuehl, 83, of Ribourde Drive, South Bend, Ind., died at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, Nov.2, in Memorial Hospital. Mr.Kuehl was born Oct.17, 1921, in South Bend, to the late William M.and Edith (Carder) Kuehl and was a lifetime area resident.
On May 27, 1944, in South Bend, he married Jean A.Nimtz, who preceded him in death Oct.15, 2004. Also preceding him in death were three brothers, Howard Russell and Donald Kuehl.
He is survived by two daughters, Jan (Ric) Good and Nancy (Bill) Coughlin, both of Indianapolis, Ind.; two sons, Dick (Marilyn) Kuehl of Mishawaka, Ind., and Doug (Peg Nelson) Kuehl of Bloomington, Ind.; and three granddaughters, Amanda and Andrea Good, and Katie Kuehl.
Mr.Kuehl retired in 1990 as president of the Oliver Estate where he had been employed since 1954, and had previously been employed by the FBI from 1948 to 1954. He was a graduate of the former Washington-Clay High School and the University of Notre Dame. He served as a fighter pilot in the 355th Fighter Group of the 8th Air Force in Europe during World War II. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, South Bend, where he served on many boards and committees and was also active in the Northern Indiana District of the United Methodist Church.He was a member and past president of the South Bend Kiwanis Club, where he maintained 45 years of perfect attendance, and the Izaak Walton League.
He served on the boards of directors of Camp Millhouse and the Northern Indiana Historical Society, and was a former member of the Indiana Society of Chicago.He was a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI and the 8th Air Force Historical Society.Bob was a member of St.Joseph Lodge 45 F & AM, Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, Orak Shrine Temple, Michigan City, Ind., BPOE #235, South Bend, and the Four Lakes Country Club, Adamsville, Mich.He was crowned a 33 Mason by the Supreme Council Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States of America, and was a member of the St.Hilary Conclave of the Red Cross of Constantine, Fort Wayne, Ind.He loved the symphony and concerts and was a member of the Broadway Theater League.He was a regular attendee of the Firefly Festival and the Wagon Wheel Playhouse, Warsaw, Ind.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m.Saturday, Nov.6, in the First United Methodist Church, 333 N.Main St., with Rev.Daniel Berger officiating.Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.today, Nov.5, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N.William St., where a Masonic memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m.
