Arthur Ruben Neely, Sr.
January 1, 1976 ~ April 7, 2025 (age 49)
Arthur Ruben Neely, known lovingly as Arthur, was born in South Bend, Indiana, on January 1, 1976. He was a vibrant soul who lived with passion, radiance, and a spirit that was magnetic. His life was a testament to the words of Maya Angelou: "My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style".
Arthur's journey began at Monroe Grade School where he was in the top 3 in his class, then onto Dickinson Middle School, where he was a basketball prodigy, earning a championship with his team and finally to Clay High School. Arthur loved math and numbers his was truly a mathematician. This achievement was a testament to his dedication, teamwork, and unyielding spirit. In addition to his athletic prowess, Arthur was also a successful businessman and a mentor to many. He had an undeniable knack for connecting with people; he never met a stranger and was loved by many. His love for music was profound, often expressing himself through rap and writing his own music. He was also a proficient cook and a replenisher, always ensuring those around him were taken care of.
Arthur is survived by his parents, Thelia Odom and Donnie Neely; his children, Syphanie (Chimmy) Southammavong, ArShawnda Neely, Diamond Neely, Derrick Moffit, Traveon Johnson, Arthur Jr., Tyler Neely, Christopher Neely, Israel, and Brenden Neely; his siblings, Ardean Plump, Arlonda (Clinton) Broughton, Arlexus (James) Crawford, Lavender Neely, Tanya Neely, Arran Plump, Armone Neely, and Arreon Neely; his special aunt, Gwendolyn Odom; Uncles Lintwood Jeffrey and Terry Manor, his special cousins, Lashaun Johnson, Bridgett Stevens, and Kinte Johnson; his special nieces, Marsha Emerson, Precious Plump, Thelia Broughton, and Taylor Broughton; and his best friend, Kevin Wilson and special friend Ronnie King.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Ardean Jones; his fraternal grandmother, Louise Peck; his son, TyShaun Neely; his granddaughter, Talynn Johnson; his significant other, Crystol Thompson; his favorite cousin, Jermall Williams; his uncle Arthur Ruben Jones (whom he was named after), grandfather Glenn Odom, Aunt Terrell Jones, cousin Orlando Bowens, and his bonus dad, Isiah Plump. The kindness of relatives and friends who shared our sorrow has comforted and sustained us in the loss of our beloved Arthur. We thank you sincerely for your expressions of sympathy. A special thanks to Arthur's aunts Brenda, Diane, Angie Neely, and Earline Jones.
A visitation for Arthur will be held on Friday April 18, 2025 at 3:00pm until 5:00pm EDT at Alford's Mortuary, located at 1222 Napier Street, South Bend, Indiana, 46601. As we gather to celebrate Arthur's life and legacy, we remember another quote from Maya Angelou that speaks deeply to his journey:
"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Arthur made everyone he met feel special, seen, and loved.
